Between Asylum Walls and Family Dreams: A Story of Days Lived Behind Bars

I was in deep pain, my friends, inside the psychiatric facility in Bethlehem, where I stayed for nearly a month and forty days. Everything there was terrible, and the conditions were deplorable. I slept alongside patients with all sorts of conditions; every type of illness was lumped together in that place.

I was subjected to a great deal of abuse. In my dreams, I had a “Rambo” within me, wanting to take revenge and wipe them all out. I used to imagine my wife by my side—in fact, I would constantly summon the image of my three children—spending every night in a fit of tears before drifting off to sleep. I was terrified that my wife might be unfaithful to me while I was away, but she called me every two days to reassure my heart about her and our children.

The thought of being locked up while my wife remained outside tortured me deeply. I felt an unbearable anguish and suffered from severe illness. Being separated from my wife and three children was agonizing, filling me with constant anxiety over them. To me, my wife’s betrayal would mean an execution sentence for everyone.

I felt an urge to harm everyone, including the staff running the facility. Time and again, I envisioned beating them all, yet I managed to pull myself together and remain patient. The doctors and medical staff there were awful—truly filthy, damn them all! The food was terrible, the toilet water for drinking was hot, and the rooms lacked air conditioning, making sleep in both the freezing cold and sweltering heat absolutely unbearable.

Filth pervaded every corner of the place, my mental state deteriorated, and I was consumed by a constant longing to escape and return home. The medication was potent and sedating; I was perpetually drowsy, collapsing onto the floor in the facility’s hallways all the time. I never want to go back there again. It has now been two and a half years that I have been safe in the embrace of my family.
