The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict: Between Historical Roots and the Horizon of Absent Justice

Posted on September 16, 2026September 16, 2026 by MOHAMMAD

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict stands as one of the most complex geopolitical and human issues in modern history, where historical land rights intersect with dimensions of national identity, regional power balances, and international law.

Historical Roots and the Struggle for Land The roots of the issue date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries with rising Zionist immigration to Palestine under the British Mandate, leading to a direct clash with the self-determination aspirations of the Palestinian people. The pivotal turning points of 1948 (the Nakba) and 1967 (the occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem) shaped the current political and demographic reality, resulting in the displacement of millions of refugees and the establishment of an ongoing system of military occupation and settlement expansion.

Key Pillars of the Conflict

  • Land and Borders: Sharp disputes over territorial sovereignty and continuous settlement expansion in the West Bank, which fragments the geographic continuity of a prospective Palestinian state.
  • Jerusalem: The city’s status as a religious, cultural, and political center, alongside Palestinian demands for East Jerusalem as the capital of their independent state.
  • Right of Return: The Palestinian stance asserting refugees’ right to return to their homes in accordance with UN Resolution 194, contrasted with repeated Israeli rejection of this issue.
  • Security and Sovereignty: The Palestinian demand for a fully sovereign state over its territory, borders, and resources, weighed against an Israeli security strategy grounded in military control and demilitarization.

Contemporary Landscape and Future Prospects Recent decades have witnessed a severe decline in the viability of a “two-state solution” due to stalled political negotiations, significant expansion of settlements, worsening humanitarian crises, and repeated military escalations, particularly in the Gaza Strip.

Achieving a resolution or a just settlement to this conflict remains contingent upon ending the occupation, securing international recognition of the legitimate national and political rights of the Palestinian people under international resolutions, and applying international law consistently without double standards.
