Photo by C Flaten via Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With growing public awareness of data centres&#8217; heavy land, water and energy use, pushback has been intense. Nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/saradorn\/2026\/09\/07\/nearly-70-oppose-data-centers-poll-finds-as-trump-blasts-communities-that-dont-want-them\/\">70 per cent of the US population<\/a> opposes their construction. But right now the market is saying build.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not like we&#8217;re not going to have data centers,&#8221; said English. &#8220;The conversation today should be how to make sure that these are thoughtfully integrated into our lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The architecture of the building does matter&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Until the AI bubble pops \u2013 as investors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/28\/michael-burry-believes-the-ai-bubble-may-burst-sooner-than-he-first-believed.html\">have warned<\/a> \u2013 or an unlikely national referendum on the buildings happens, they look set up to keep going. So what role should architects play?<\/p>\n<p>At present, architect involvement in data centre design often comes from corporate firms large enough to have a full data centre division. Gensler is one of the design-forward firms that is competing for data centre commissions.<\/p>\n<p>It is currently designing a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/05\/15\/stratos-data-center-designs-gensler-utah\/\">\u00a07.5 GW hyperscale data centre in Utah for O&#8217;Leary Digital<\/a>, and a cluster of five data centres for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/05\/21\/gensler-thistle-data-center-phoenix-corten-steel\/\">Menlo Digital in Arizona.<\/a> At both sites, renders show facade treatments designed to improve the appearance of the buildings \u2013 striated facades to match the desert mountains in Utah and Corten steel in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>This move towards beautification or \u2013 in some cases, camouflage \u2013 represents one of the main ways architects are having an impact on these buildings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2327620\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2327620\" style=\"width: 2364px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327620 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.dezeen.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gensler-stratos-data-center-utah_dezeen_2364_col_3.jpg?resize=1280%2C714&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Stratos data center\" width=\"1280\" height=\"714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.dezeen.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gensler-stratos-data-center-utah_dezeen_2364_col_3.jpg 2364w, https:\/\/static.dezeen.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gensler-stratos-data-center-utah_dezeen_2364_col_3-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.dezeen.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gensler-stratos-data-center-utah_dezeen_2364_col_3-1536x857.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.dezeen.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gensler-stratos-data-center-utah_dezeen_2364_col_3-2048x1143.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/static.dezeen.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gensler-stratos-data-center-utah_dezeen_2364_col_3-411x229.jpg 411w, https:\/\/static.dezeen.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gensler-stratos-data-center-utah_dezeen_2364_col_3-822x459.jpg 822w, https:\/\/static.dezeen.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gensler-stratos-data-center-utah_dezeen_2364_col_3-1233x688.jpg 1233w, https:\/\/static.dezeen.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gensler-stratos-data-center-utah_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x475.jpg 852w, https:\/\/static.dezeen.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gensler-stratos-data-center-utah_dezeen_2364_col_3-213x119.jpg 213w, https:\/\/static.dezeen.com\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gensler-stratos-data-center-utah_dezeen_2364_col_3-1704x951.jpg 1704w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2364px) 100vw, 2364px\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2327620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gensler has designed a striated facade for the Stratos Hyperscale Data Center in Utah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;I think with good design, with proper architectural gestures, you can either make these buildings blend in or stand out, and I think that it&#8217;s going to come up more and more as these buildings need to become a little bit more local,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gensler.com\/\">Gensler<\/a> critical facilities practice leader Rob LoBuono told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The architecture of the building does matter,&#8221; continued LoBuono. &#8220;We really do find that a well-designed building has a strong impact in the community, even if the current opinion of them is, you know, fluid.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Otero Verzier, for her part, doesn&#8217;t believe that the role of the architect should be reduced to facades.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The idea that the most architects can do is design a facade is quite sad and says more about the lack of ambition of the profession than about the reality of data centres,&#8221; said Otero Verzier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If, as a profession,&#8221; she added, &#8220;we want to be completely irrelevant, then we can focus on designing facades for data centres.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integrating data centres into urban schemes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, architecture studio Grimshaw <a href=\"https:\/\/grimshaw.global\/news\/articles\/archive\/data-centres-and-the-city\/\">presented an <\/a>integrated urban plan based around data centre development, bringing the typology firmly into conversations around speculative architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Informed by a real project with developer Goodman, the proposal positions the data centre development as &#8220;the catalyst of a mixed-use renewal precinct \u2013 next to homes, studios, shops and even an urban farm&#8221;. The proposal would pump the data centre&#8217;s waste heat back into the surrounding buildings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Close quarters aren&#8217;t a liability; they&#8217;re the key that lets resources circulate instead of being wasted,&#8221; said Grimshaw in the brief.<\/p>\n<p>Legacy Investing&#8217;s English told Dezeen that it was already developing several data centres integrated into wider mixed-use schemes, while the architecture studios we spoke to were broadly positive about the concept.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the biggest data centre developers don&#8217;t seem to be paying much attention to the thinking coming out of architecture biennales.<\/p>\n<p>Efficiencies and monumental boxes are, and will probably remain, the norm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.corgan.com\/\">Corgan<\/a> data centre studio leader Tom Kruger said that integrating data centres within other structures and wider developments is an &#8220;exception and not the rule&#8221;. Most of the architects Dezeen spoke with mentioned landscaping or parklands around the data centres, though they noted these plans run up against security concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Both largely sterile and industrial in size, data centres represent a unique sort of infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than likening these buildings to warehouses or power plants, English compared data centres to parking infrastructure. Photo courtesy of SOM<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Most large data centres are built in areas outside of cities, with plenty of land \u2013 and land usage is a large part of the public&#8217;s complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Kruger, who has worked in the field for 16 years, said that he does see these centres becoming more &#8220;elevated&#8221; from an architectural perspective, though mainly through technologies that make them more energy efficient.<\/p>\n<p>Other companies have proposed using older structures, as with Terawulf&#8217;s plans to build a data centre in a decommissioned Kentucky smelter.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/01\/28\/timber-data-centre-microsoft-virginia\/\"> built data centres using mass timber<\/a> in a show of healthier building materials.
