That makes disabling AI features that you may not<br \/>\nwant more difficult. It also means that the AI models necessary<br \/>\nfor running Apple Intelligence will take up space on your<br \/>\ndisk<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/102149\">,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/102149\">even if you don\u2019t use them<\/a> or if you go<br \/>\nthrough your settings to individually find and disable AI<br \/>\ncapabilities.<\/p>\n<p>In response, a developer known as <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/omlahore\">Om Lahore<\/a> on GitHub<br \/>\nlast week created RemoveMacAI, a command-line tool that allows<br \/>\nmacOS 27 users to \u201cturn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27\u201d in a<br \/>\nway that is \u201cfully reversible,\u201d per <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/omlahore\/RemoveMacAI\">the GitHub page<\/a>.<br \/>\nThey said that Apple\u2019s Intelligence models take up \u201cabout 12GB,\u201d<br \/>\nbut the models can actually take up over 30GB, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/1004672\/mac-delete-apple-intelligence-ai-tool?\">The<br \/>\nVerge<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>RemoveMacAI \u201cturns off Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image<br \/>\nPlayground, the ChatGPT extension, and all the summaries, then it<br \/>\ndeletes the models and stops macOS from downloading them again.<br \/>\nDictation still works because it\u2019s a separate setting,\u201d the<br \/>\ndeveloper said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/MacOS\/comments\/1ww1exr\/macos_27_dropped_the_apple_intelligence_off\/\">Reddit post<\/a> first spotted by<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2026\/10\/05\/apple-intelligence-removal-tool-frees-mac-storage\/\">MacRumors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds crazy but it\u2019s not <code>rm<\/code>ing files in the <em>\/System\/<\/em> folder\u2009\u2014\u2009it uses techniques that work with System Integrity Protection remaining enabled. I mean, I wouldn\u2019t do it on a production machine, but, I don\u2019t want to disable Apple Intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>I can see the reasons why some people are frustrated that MacOS 27 Golden Gate doesn\u2019t have built-in support for disabling this and removing the local models, though. If your Mac only has 256 or even 512 GB of storage, a dozen GB (or more) is meaningful. And there are institutional groups that have rules against AI\u2009\u2014\u2009these places aren\u2019t allowing Golden Gate at all until and unless Apple Intelligence can be removed.
