Although consumer products could not always be acquired or purchased outright, with facilities like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/The_Eclipse_of_Elegant_Economy\/EgWiAgAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Britain+affluent+society+hire+purchase+never-never&amp;pg=PA202&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>hire purchase<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/Consuming_Passion_RLE_Retailing_and_Dist\/87CcmSj1hOIC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=affluent+society+mail+order+catalogues+hire+purchase&amp;pg=PA33&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>mail order catalogues<\/span><\/a> enabling buyers to spread the cost over a period of time, this was definitely something new. For the first time, most Britons came to acquire a level of spending power high enough to obtain a wide range of home comforts; something that ordinary people in previous decades could only dream of. To some extent, it was a sign that the hardships and sacrifices of the war years had given way to a happier, brighter tomorrow. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Britons came to have more time for recreation, helped by an extension of paid leave and reductions in working hours for an increasing percentage of the workforce, with more people embracing the opportunity to take holidays <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/Working_Class_Community_in_the_Age_of_Af\/zqA0DgAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Postwar+affluent+society+holidays+from+home&amp;pg=PA1980&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>outside<\/span><\/a> their home environment; whether on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/A_History_of_Post_war_Britain\/tZ4KAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;bsq=Postwar+Britain+affluent+society+holidays+caravans&amp;dq=Postwar+Britain+affluent+society+holidays+caravans&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>camping sites<\/span><\/a> or on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/The_Kinks\/C1jZDwAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Postwar+Britain+affluent+society+holidays+abroad&amp;pg=PA45&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>overseas excursions<\/span><\/a>. Although a visit to the seaside was the most common form of holiday, as it had been for years, more and more people went abroad for their holidays; the number taking this opportunity going up sevenfold during the Fifties and Sixties and the amount spent on such trips <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/The_British_Seaside\/uydACzcGjQEC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Estimated+expenditure+on+holidays+abroad,+meanwhile,+rose+steadily+1970+prices&amp;pg=PA64&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>more than tripling<\/span><\/a>. Greater wealth also meant that there was greater propensity for households to save, with savings as a percentage of disposable income <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/The_British_Economy_in_1975\/D3c8AAAAIAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Table+9.6+shows+the+percent+composition+of+total+savings+over+the+past+decade,&amp;pg=PA278&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>rising more than twofold<\/span><\/a> over the course of those two decades. Aware of this trend, the government introduced in 1956 a novel savings scheme known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/An_Economic_and_Social_History_of_Gambli\/ByboAAAAIAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=working+class+savings+premium+bonds+1956&amp;pg=PA60&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>Premium Bonds<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/Supermac\/oGLGF9g_IIEC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=premium+bonds+1956+popular&amp;pg=PA327&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>four in ten<\/span><\/a> Britons would come to own bonds of their own, which was a development arguably attributable to holders being offered the chance to win cash prizes; a popular incentive for purchasing these bonds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Signs of affluence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Much of the new consumerism was embraced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/London_s_Working_Class_Youth_and_the_Mak\/dZEvEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=the+teen+market+stayed+almost+entirely+working+class&amp;pg=PA66&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>teenagers<\/span><\/a>, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/The_Moulton_Bicycle\/BDdbDwAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Postwar+Britain+affluent+society+working+class+women+refigertaors&amp;pg=PA66&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>personal wealth<\/span><\/a> enabled them to spend their spare cash on items like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/Oxford_AQA_History_A_Level_and_AS_Compon\/Ks3KDwAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Britain+affluent+society+youths+coffee+bars&amp;pg=PA26&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>fashion<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/Enquiring_History_British_Society_since\/jRSCkP716gkC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Britain+affluent+society+youths+spending+money+at+coffee+bars&amp;pg=PT74&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>personal transport<\/span><\/a>, and records (with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.za\/books\/edition\/Twentieth_century_British_History_Made_S\/A9Lt4eZiL6sC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;bsq=Twentiet+hcentury+british+history+made+simple+peter+king+LPs+1963&amp;dq=Twentiet+hcentury+british+history+made+simple+peter+king+LPs+1963&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>85.5 million LPs<\/span><\/a> sold alone in 1963) and at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/Postwar_Politics_Society_and_the_Folk_Re\/tZ8yEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=affluent+society+british+teenager+records&amp;pg=PA65&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>meeting places<\/span><\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/The_Rise_and_Fall_of_the_British_Welfare\/NDgdEQAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Affluence+was+blamed+for+undermining+the+morals+patronize+coffee+bars&amp;pg=PP92&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>coffee bars<\/span><\/a>, caf\u00e9s and dance halls, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.za\/books\/edition\/Twentieth_century_British_History_Made_S\/A9Lt4eZiL6sC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;bsq=Twentiet+hcentury+british+history+made+simple+peter+king+LPs+1963&amp;dq=Twentiet+hcentury+british+history+made+simple+peter+king+LPs+1963&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>5 million people<\/span><\/a> attending the latter weekly by the early Sixties; a 40% increase since 1951. As a sign of the changing times, an <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?redir_esc=y&amp;id=EXOgAAAAMAAJ&amp;focus=searchwithinvolume&amp;q=fencing\"><span>increasing proportion<\/span><\/a> participated in sporting activities once solely the preserve of the elite, such as mountain climbing and skiing. <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.za\/books?id=iXilh9X8pwIC&amp;newbks=0&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;pg=PA68&amp;dq=four+years+old+in+an+urban+community&amp;hl=en&amp;redir_esc=y#v=onepage&amp;q=comparative&amp;f=false\"><span>Children<\/span><\/a> tasted the fruits of growing consumer prosperity, with yearly expenditure on average children for entertainment reaching just over an estimated (in contemporary money) \u00a3415 by 1956, with toys making up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.za\/books\/edition\/The_British_Toy_Business\/5F8I-877spgC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=British+toy+business+It+was+estimated+that+by+1956+%C2%A319+was+spent+each+year+on+entertaining&amp;pg=PA157&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>a third<\/span><\/a> of this sum. Women were also beneficiaries of the consumer boom, with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/The_Political_Culture_of_the_Left_in_Aff\/lj-HDAAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Britain+affluent+society+working+class+women+labour+saving+devices&amp;pg=PA118&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>daily lives<\/span><\/a> made easier by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/Migrant_Women_s_Voices\/fIhyCwAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Britain+working+class+women+labour+saving+devices+refrigerators&amp;pg=PA234&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>spread<\/span><\/a> of appliances like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/A_Companion_to_Contemporary_Britain_1939\/lA9aJ8X_rAwC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Britain+affluence+working+class+women+refrigerators&amp;pg=PA377&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>fridges<\/span><\/a>, washing machines and vacuum cleaners, while people in general devoted more time to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/Sixties_Britain\/qd2sAgAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Mark+donnelly+youth+cultures,+moral+panic+and+pop+music&amp;pg=PA34&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>comfort and appearance<\/span><\/a> of their residence, such as through gardening and decorating. One symbol of affluence, the automobile, also came within the reach of an increasing number of homes. At the start of the Fifties, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/The_Transformation_of_British_Life_1950\/hGBnAAAAMAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;bsq=Britain+car+ownership+1951+14+percent&amp;dq=Britain+car+ownership+1951+14+percent&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>less than a fifth<\/span><\/a> of households had a car, but by 1970 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/British_Transport_Since_1914\/kmoiAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;bsq=Britain+car+ownership+1970+half+households&amp;dq=Britain+car+ownership+1970+half+households&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>majority<\/span><\/a> had at least one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The new prosperity was supported by government policy, as exemplified by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/Speak_for_Britain\/8cIz32iH7BQC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Conversely,+labour+was+never+sure+how+to+respond+to+affluence&amp;pg=PA317&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>cuts in taxation<\/span><\/a>, the liberalisation of credit, and (symbolically for a nation that had lived with it for so long) the abolition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/Waste_into_Weapons\/uUlLCgAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=1954+conservatives+once+again+in+power+ended+rationing&amp;pg=PA259&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>rationing<\/span><\/a>. In addition, more opportunities became available for workers to switch to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/The_Who_and_Philosophy\/BO2AEQAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=THE+%22ORIGINAL%22+MODS+OF+THE+1960s+Britain+was+a+newly+affluent+nation&amp;pg=PA4&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>more preferable occupations<\/span><\/a>, while both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/A_Companion_to_Contemporary_Britain_1939\/lA9aJ8X_rAwC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=affluent+Society+Britain+unemployment+inflation&amp;pg=PA194&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>price rises<\/span><\/a> and the rate of joblessness were kept <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/Ideas_and_Economic_Crises_in_Britain_fro\/KoRCAdfkAfEC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Affluent+Society+Britain+unemployment+low+Macmillan&amp;pg=PA69&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>to a minimum<\/span><\/a>; adding to a sense of general wellbeing. The more prosperous economic climate led to a decline in the reliance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.za\/books\/edition\/Mail_Order_Retailing_in_Britain\/DXno3HU5wL4C?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Thus+arthur+Newton%27s+well+to+do+pawn&amp;pg=PA80&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>traditional forms of credit<\/span><\/a> like \u2018tick\u2019 by corner shops and transactions with pawnshops; institutions that had previously flourished during the Nineteenth Century. In a diary extract from April 1969, the (then) social security minister Richard Crossman reflected on the spread of mass prosperity since the Forties, arguing that Britain had transformed itself \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/books\/edition\/The_Diaries_of_a_Cabinet_Minister_Secret\/WM3XAAAAMAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;bsq=into+a+place+where+the+majority+are+well+off+and+the+minority+are+poor+Crossman+diaries&amp;dq=into+a+place+where+the+majority+are+well+off+and+the+minority+are+poor+Crossman+diaries&amp;printsec=frontcover\"><span>into a place where the majority are well off and the minority are poor<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Global trend<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Britain\u2019s rise to mass affluence was not unique, however. It was, in fact, part of a wider global trend.
