Even after it stopped living in ROM, IBM-Compatibles shipped with GW-BASIC, and now we have a project that asks: what if they still did? <a href=\"https:\/\/thoreaubasic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Thoreau BASIC<\/a> is GW-BASIC, but updated for the 21st century.<\/p><div id=\"dev95-3183447297\" class=\"dev95- dev95-entity-placement\"><center>\r\n<script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 50,\r\n    'width' : 320,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highrevenueformat.com\/4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n\t<\/center><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s meant to be code-compatible with all old GW-BASIC code \u2014 which means, yes, line numbers and GOTOs abound \u2014 but it can boot from a modern x86 PC\u2019s UEFI or run under Windows and take full advantage of modern hardware with 64-bit memory and multithreading support. Graphics are 24-bit at any resolution your monitor can handle, and there are a number of handy built-in commands to handle file management, graphics \u2014 including sprites \u2014 mouse and keyboard input, 32-channel sound, and more. It is also not strictly an interpreted language. Programs can be compiled to run under Windows or bare-metal on UEFI x86 machines.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not open source, but the project is \u201cpay what you want\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/tarjan.itch.io\/thoreaubasic\" target=\"_blank\">over on Itch.io, <\/a>where you can also see a number of examples.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve seen other attempts to revive BASIC over the years, <a href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2026\/07\/18\/write-2d-and-3d-games-in-modern-moonbasic\/\">like MoonBASIC<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2026\/07\/19\/qt6-brings-basic-to-the-web-browser-or-your-computer\/\">BASIC-256,<\/a> but we have to admit it\u2019s never going to be the dominant force it once was, regardless of how nostalgic we might get. That\u2019s probably for the best, but it\u2019s still nice to know you can boot to BASIC if you really, really want to.
