On May 24, 1775, Congress unanimously elected <a href=\"https:\/\/prologue.blogs.archives.gov\/2019\/09\/12\/john-hancock-and-his-signature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Hancock<\/a> to replace Randolph. The 39-year-old Hancock had already amassed an impressive resume. After the Battles of Lexington and Concord, about 20,000 provincial militiamen had assembled in the Boston area to stave off British forces. After <a href=\"https:\/\/prologue.blogs.archives.gov\/2025\/04\/18\/lexington-and-concord-22-hours-and-a-shot-heard-around-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lexington and Concord<\/a>, the British troops were eager to quash the rebellion and in June planned to launch an attack on Boston. Details of their plan were leaked, and about 1,000 Massachusetts and Connecticut soldiers gathered to defend a hill in Charlestown.<\/p>\n<p>The battle occurred on June 17\u00a0and was mistakenly known as the Battle of Bunker Hill (in reality, it was \u201cBreed\u2019s Hill\u201d). On July 6, 1775, Congress approved a <a href=\"https:\/\/founders.archives.gov\/documents\/Jefferson\/01-01-02-0113-0005\">Declaration of Causes<\/a> outlining the rationale and necessity for the colonies taking up arms, arguing:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In our own native Land, in defence of the Freedom that is our Birthright, and which we ever enjoyed till the late Violation of it\u2014for the protection of our Property, acquired solely by the honest Industry of our fore-fathers and ourselves, against Violence actually offered, we have taken up Arms. We shall lay them down when Hostilities shall cease on the part of the Aggressors, and all danger of their being renewed shall be removed, and not before.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Congress also sent King George III the <a href=\"https:\/\/founders.archives.gov\/documents\/Jefferson\/01-01-02-0114\">Olive Branch Petition<\/a>, a final attempt at resolving disputes between the colonies and Great Britain.
