(Just look to Steven Meisel\u2019s storied photography career, achieved with only a background in fashion illustration from Parsons.) In an age when a camera sits in everyone\u2019s pocket, and an Instagram post can get more traction than a magazine spread, the field is more saturated than ever. Now, getting into the industry is no longer the hard part \u2014 standing out is.<\/p><div id=\"dev95-389077828\" class=\"dev95- dev95-entity-placement\"><center>\r\n<script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 50,\r\n    'width' : 320,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highrevenueformat.com\/4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n\t<\/center><\/div>\n<p>Ahead, Fashionista asked four fashion photographers what it really takes to make it in this competitive field.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>You Don\u2019t Need Credentials or the \u2018Right\u2019 Gear<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1013\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fashionista.com\/.image\/NTg6MDAwMDAwMDAwODAyNDYz\/lyrie-wang-photographer-1.jpg?resize=1013%2C675&#038;ssl=1\"><figcaption>\n<p>Photo: Lyrie Wang<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bylyrie\/\">Lyrie Wang<\/a>, whose work has appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/bylyrie.com\/about\">Harper\u2019s Bazaar and Esquire<\/a>, had a camera and a dream when she quit her job as a product manager in tech to pursue fashion photography. All she knew was how to take cute pictures for Instagram and curate an aesthetic feed.<\/p>\n<p>To learn the basics, she turned to YouTube, looking up what \u201caperture\u201d and \u201cshutter speed\u201d mean and watching tutorials on how to color grade and adjust her camera settings. \u201cThat\u2019s the easy part. The information is there,\u201d Wang explains. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thaliagochez\/?hl=en\">Thal\u00eda Gochez<\/a> \u2014 a Los Angeles-born photographer snapshotting BIPOC subjects across the world \u2014 did the same, using YouTube to learn how to load film.<\/p>\n<p>There aren\u2019t hard and fast rules around gear, either. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/danbassini\/?hl=en\">Dan Bassini<\/a>, a street style photographer, exclusively uses a 35-millimeter point-and-shoot. \u201cPeople don\u2019t take it seriously, which I use to my benefit because they don\u2019t think I\u2019m a professional photographer,\u201d he shares. \u201cSo I can get in places that other people with a big camera rig can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gochez bought her first camera for a dollar at a San Francisco flea market. Years later, she captured a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ffforma.studio\/talent\/thalia-gochez\">Nike campaign<\/a> on that same camera, battery cover missing and held together with tape.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Just Go for It<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fashionista.com\/.image\/NTg6MDAwMDAwMDAwODAyNDYx\/emily-white-photographer-1.jpg?resize=540%2C675&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"540\" height=\"675\"><figcaption>\n<p>Photo: Emily White<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite hailing from very different backgrounds, all four photographers we spoke with say one trait is essential: the audacity to act. \u201cYou have to be unapologetic about putting yourself forward,\u201d London-based fashion photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/emilywhte\/?hl=en\">Emily White<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cI am shameless about overselling myself,\u201d Wang echoes. With no prior experience under her belt, she posted in a Facebook group for photographers and models, introducing herself as a photographer who was looking to shoot.<\/p>\n<p>For Gochez, this audacity surfaced in a community college fashion styling class, when she was watching a photographer work but felt the urge to take the camera and try it herself. \u201cIf he\u2019s figured out that camera, I can figure it out,\u201d she says. \u201cLike, what makes him different from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bassini\u2019s audacity takes shape in simply showing up: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.danbassini.com\/no-invite\">Without an invite<\/a>, he\u2019s photographed New York Fashion Week for a decade. \u201c\u2018What if I just try to walk through the front door?&#8217;\u201d he recalls asking himself. \u201cIt works more than you\u2019d expect.\u201d This September, Bassini unveiled his 10-year retrospective titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Dc3vmYGDk7e\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;stkn=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\">No Invite<\/a>,\u201d which featured photographic highlights of sneaking into NYFW parties and standing outside runway venues.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Manage the Fear<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fashionista.com\/.image\/NTg6MDAwMDAwMDAwODAyNDYy\/emily-white-photographer-2.jpg?resize=540%2C675&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"540\" height=\"675\"><figcaption>\n<p>Photo: Emily White<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say a photographer\u2019s career is easy (or glamorous). \u201cI definitely had nerves and moments of doubt (still do), but I never really let them stop me,\u201d White shares. Pushing through that discomfort has allowed her to eventually build a portfolio that includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonimage.co.uk\/emily-white\">Cartier, Dior Beauty and Hypebeast<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>For Gochez, having imposter syndrome is inevitable, even part of the process. \u201cYou\u2019re gonna feel all these emotions, but you have to understand that\u2019s part of the creative process, and you have to see it through towards the end,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, for Wang, splitting everything into small, manageable steps meant she never felt like she was taking a big leap. \u201cThe first step is really all you need to get the ball rolling, and then every other step becomes more clear as you go,\u201d she shares. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Develop a Point of View<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fashionista.com\/.image\/NTg6MDAwMDAwMDAwODAyMjk3\/thalia-gochez-photo-2.jpg?resize=547%2C675&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"547\" height=\"675\"><figcaption>\u201cQuincea\u00f1era Delicada Campaign.\u201d 2025, Los Angeles<\/p>\n<p>Photo: Thal\u00eda Gochez; Style and Creative: Jasmine Maldonado<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To stand out, each photographer developed a distinct signature, and many found their inspiration from their own lives. Gochez started by photographing girls from her own neighborhood: girls the industry didn\u2019t consider models, but whom Gochez found beautiful. That perspective became her signature: photographing people of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was relentless in discovering my artistic voice and it being so distinctively \u2018me\u2019 meant that the industry couldn\u2019t ignore that,\u201d she says. Her clients include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ffforma.studio\/talent\/thalia-gochez\"><em>Vogue<\/em>, <em>The New York Times<\/em> and Apple<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bassini, too, drew from his life. He got his start in music photography \u2014 a scrappy, DIY scene \u2014 so he brought that approach to the glamorous world of fashion week. In practice, that meant capturing close-up portraits while other photographers sought out more editorial or abstract shots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing to set your work apart from the other two dozen people standing next to you with the same camera pointed at the same model?\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, not everyone starts out with a unique visual style. That point of view can be built over time, with continued practice and evolving taste. Wang developed hers by treating her Instagram as a research platform, constantly studying other photographers\u2019 campaigns and taking note of what she liked and disliked.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>You Need To Hustle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fashionista.com\/.image\/NTg6MDAwMDAwMDAwODAyMzAy\/dan-bassini-photo-4.jpg?resize=540%2C675&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"540\" height=\"675\"><figcaption>\n<p>Photo: Dan Bassini<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, hustling was also essential to these photographers\u2019 success.\u00a0To find out where fashion shows were taking place, Bassini tracked hairdressers and makeup artists who geotagged their locations online. White, in addition to scoping out fashion week show locations to capture street style, picked up assistant gigs and retouched for other photographers to pay the bills. \u201cAlongside that, I was constantly making my own work and trying to build a portfolio I could eventually pitch with,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was a slow process of cold emailing, coffee chats, meeting people on set and collaborating on as many tests and personal projects as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Wang, hustling meant taking a series of strategic steps, beginning with her Instagram.\u00a0After archiving old posts and curating her grid, she would monitor what other photographers were putting out to identify who the decision-makers were, so she could connect with them. \u201cYou need a portfolio first and foremost \u2014 and good work,\u201d she explains. \u201cBut beyond that, you have to be pretty savvy about who needs to see that work for it to go somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Don\u2019t Give Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fashionista.com\/.image\/NTg6MDAwMDAwMDAwODAyMzAx\/dan-bassini-photo-4-1.jpg?resize=540%2C675&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"540\" height=\"675\"><figcaption>\n<p>Photo: Dan Bassini<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the end of the day, what sets these photographers apart is that they never quit, regardless of setbacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[There are days] I woke up depressed and I didn\u2019t want to do shit,\u201d Gochez says. \u201cBut then I picked up the camera, and my creativity found me in the end. I think it\u2019s like working out: It\u2019s a muscle that you need to keep training.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to not take rejections personally. Wang reminded herself that art is subjective, which encouraged her to keep going. \u201cEvery mistake can be made to seem like a choice, too,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>By using what was available to them, walking into rooms without invites, networking wisely and showing up consistently, these photographers forged their own paths in the competitive world of fashion photography.
