This year, independent collectives across London got together to shake up the establishment by just doing it themselves, together. <\/p>\n<p id=\"bd0114_2731\" data-ic-marker=\"bd0114_2731_t3\">I visited two exhibitions that stood out not only for giving space to emerging talent, but for offering a welcome shift from polished showrooms and stark galleries: relaxed, immersive spaces that invited you to hang out, interact and explore. <\/p><div id=\"dev95-1237702381\" class=\"dev95- dev95-entity-placement\"><center>\r\n<script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 50,\r\n    'width' : 320,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highrevenueformat.com\/4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n\t<\/center><\/div>\n<p id=\"6d876b_398\" data-ic-marker=\"774977_1002\"><a href=\"https:\/\/designeverything.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Design Everything<\/a> began after London designer Lewis Duckworth was quoted \u00a3900 per square metre to exhibit at LDF and decided to create his own show. After a guerrilla exhibition from the back of a van in 2025 (which I sadly missed), the collective took over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aram.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Aram&#8217;s<\/a> basement this year, with a free open-call show featuring more than 100 designers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"171661_7520\" data-ic-marker=\"5f1afb_3931\">I went, saw, and stayed for a full two hours. <\/p>\n<p id=\"f4c2bc_155\" data-ic-marker=\"e60e1e_1346\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"880\" data-image-height=\"495\" data-image-id=\"1850638\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850638_249_145407_iqLdginEJ.jpeg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><em id=\"cb93cb_2858\" class=\"caption\">Design Everything at Aram Gallery. Photo by Anki Delfmann<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"1a0fec_3085\" data-ic-marker=\"416e84_2139\"><a href=\"https:\/\/designeverything.org\/platform\/with-limitations-aram-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">With Limitations<\/a> explored the realities of emerging designers in London. More than 100 pieces filled a fictional designer&#8217;s flat, making it feel like stepping into someone&#8217;s home, with each work revealing the limitations that shaped it. Even better, many of the designers behind the work were actually there, some of them making things.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a42774_3601\" data-ic-marker=\"ea8767_2292\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"880\" data-image-height=\"495\" data-image-id=\"1850650\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850650_249_145407_uqnika3hq.jpeg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><em id=\"62135e_3864\" class=\"caption\">Polly Jennings demonstrating how she makes slip casts at Design Everything. Photo by Anki Delfmann <\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"831628_3708\" data-ic-marker=\"7e9539_1085\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/pollyjdesign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Polly Jennings<\/a> was in the kitchen making slip casts, which normally require a plaster mould. With the limitation of cost and time (her design practice is her 5-to-9), she has developed a process using a net made from greyboard, which is peeled and thrown away once the cast has formed. The constraints dictate an angular shape, in no way less appealing than a classic curved form. Photo by Anki Delfmann<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"9b9115_4090\" data-ic-marker=\"5dc45b_2226\">Cities like London are becoming increasingly devoid of workshop space. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/studioplait\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Studio Plait<\/a>&#8216;s pieces could be every design student&#8217;s dream flat-share setup: hacking common archetypes while retaining their original function, they explore how designing, prototyping and making can happen in domestic spaces, using cutoffs, found pieces and second hand hardware. <\/p>\n<p id=\"4ae2f9_1922\" data-ic-marker=\"9be154_3520\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"880\" data-image-height=\"660\" data-image-id=\"1850660\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850660_249_145407_8p6PHsdIY.jpeg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><em id=\"c0e666_4136\" class=\"caption\">Cast On by Symran Shah at Design Everything. Photo by Anki Delfmann\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"679fe_3023\" data-ic-marker=\"4ac327_2439\">Working with limitations of time, space and tools in a shared house, Alex Lock prototyped mainly with a hacksaw, a set of files and repurposed materials. Cutlerette was made with what he calls an opportunistic design process, using hobby knife handles and a matching cigarette case.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d6b01a_533\" data-ic-marker=\"810f1b_716\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"bfac6_637\" data-ic-marker=\"2aab51_339\">The other exhibition I stayed at much longer than planned was one I stumbled upon completely by chance. After a day of walking across London, the RCA exhibition I&#8217;d been aiming for was unexpectedly closed, so I wandered into the last one still open next door. From the space and smells to the people welcoming you in, it felt less like entering an exhibition and more like arriving at someone&#8217;s impossibly lovely home: part parlour, part workshop, part multi-sensory retreat. <\/p>\n<p id=\"e87804_2971\" data-ic-marker=\"71af83_1926\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"880\" data-image-height=\"660\" data-image-id=\"1850640\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850640_249_145407_Vp_q_BsnH.jpeg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><em id=\"c798ea_1607\" class=\"caption\">Perfectly Imperfect at Brompton Design District. Photo by Anki Delfmann <\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"ade405_1727\" data-ic-marker=\"9ac1a4_3460\"><a href=\"https:\/\/homenka.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Homenk\u00e0<\/a>&#8216;s Nch\u1ecd: Our Parlour recreated an Igbo domestic space centred around an heirloom reinterpretation of the traditional strategy game Nch\u1ecd. Created by four Igbo women, the installation explored how everyday objects, rituals and traditions gain meaning through use, memory and shared experience.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f2b454_2033\" data-ic-marker=\"b1edaf_1136\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"880\" data-image-height=\"660\" data-image-id=\"1850642\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850642_249_145407_b5_NkWzOX.jpeg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><em id=\"76a3d1_6118\" class=\"caption\">Nch\u1ecd by Homenk\u00e0 at Perfectly Imperfect. Photo by Anki Delfmann <\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"b95403_1722\" data-ic-marker=\"11642d_640\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoeene.design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Zo\u00eb Chinoso Ene<\/a> redesigned the game as a striking wall feature, turning something made for play into a piece of contemporary interior\u00a0design.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fc7f58_1140\" data-ic-marker=\"96a38c_5512\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"880\" data-image-height=\"660\" data-image-id=\"1850646\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850646_249_145407_rrwKGhFDq.jpeg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><em id=\"310f31_5988\" class=\"caption\">Nch\u1ecd by Homenk\u00e0 at Perfectly Imperfect. Photo by Anki Delfmann <\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"19df6c_7075\" data-ic-marker=\"ab6b69_1033\">Inspired by traditional craft, Homenk\u00e0 also questions why some objects are labelled craft rather than design, and the hierarchies this creates. The work brings traditional making into a contemporary context, supporting local materials, skills and everyday design.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ae78b3_6355\" data-ic-marker=\"374453_3821\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"880\" data-image-height=\"660\" data-image-id=\"1850648\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850648_249_145407_ueF0TApJw.jpeg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><em id=\"1b45ad_526\" class=\"caption\">Our Parlour at Perfectly Imperfect.
