Tying your stuff down securely is important, so that nothing gets lost in the drink. Rather than rope, which can get wet, bikerafters traditionally used waterproof, polyurethane ski straps to hold their gear down.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6e4c60_753\" data-ic-marker=\"61aa12_212\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1851933_81_145515_SA6fD74kH.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><em id=\"abae9_1632\" class=\"caption\">Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/kokopelli.com\/blogs\/stories-from-the-water\/bikerafting-trips-the-american-west\" rel=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Kokopelli<\/a> <\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"d964de_1133\" data-ic-marker=\"47fc47_618\">In 2010, when preparing for a 300-mile bikerafting trip through Alaska&#8217;s Lost Coast, adventure photographer Cameron Lawson wanted something more secure. He expanded upon the ski strap, overmolding the buckle with the polyurethane for a sturdier connection. He also beefed up the straps themselves, making them wider and thicker, and adding texture so that they could be grabbed with gloves on.<\/p>\n<p id=\"89bfed_6278\" data-ic-marker=\"6aab57_1411\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1851967_81_145515_zK2pf_02z.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"5686f5_2869\" data-ic-marker=\"c3b5a8_740\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1851942_81_145515_G9yifmoaJ.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"> <\/p>\n<p id=\"bf3f5_375\" data-ic-marker=\"91aba3_371\">&#8220;The straps worked exceptionally well at securing his equipment in the wet, sandy and rough environment,&#8221; writes <a href=\"https:\/\/titanstraps.com\/\" rel=\"\">Titan Straps<\/a>, the company Lawson eventually formed. &#8220;And their gear didn&#8217;t budge as he and his teammate paddled across choppy ocean swells and peddled over miles of baseball-sized cobbles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"71a1e5_820\" data-ic-marker=\"4555ab_1128\">After returning from his trip, Lawson had more straps made, and starting handing them out to contractors and tradespeople for testing. Today the company makes them in a variety of sizes and they&#8217;re resistant to UV, freezing, gasoline and chemicals.
