For the past two years, I\u2019ve been the board secretary; part of my duties is keeping a roster of who is in the orchestra.<\/p><div id=\"dev95-3175279150\" class=\"dev95- dev95-entity-placement\"><center>\r\n<script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 50,\r\n    'width' : 320,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highrevenueformat.com\/4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n\t<\/center><\/div>\n<p>We\u2019ve got a database (aka spreadsheet). I\u2019m an organized person. Simple enough, right?<\/p>\n<p>Wrong! <strong>Keeping an up-to-date, accurate roster was a nearly impossible goal<\/strong>. The reasons are numerous:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Every month, a few random people trial the orchestra. Some of them never check in with me to let me know they\u2019re actually joining.<\/li>\n<li>Likewise, some members drop out by ghosting. They would rather receive weekly emails for years than formally quit.<\/li>\n<li>Some people only show up intermittently to practices, making it hard to tell if they\u2019ve quietly dropped out or are just sick\/busy.<\/li>\n<li>Some people act on their own without telling anyone, like when the trumpet section invited three guest trumpet players to a concert with no advance warning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And you know what? This is fine. It\u2019s a casual community orchestra. People might be left off the weekly email list or concert program. We play on.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>What if the database <em>did<\/em> need to be exact?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s tough because I\u2019m increasingly convinced that <strong>there will always be a gap between a database and the real-world stuff it\u2019s tracking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that time when <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/jpmorgan-unlucky-owner-fake-nickel-121530808.html?ref=blog.danlew.net\"><u>JPMorgan thought it had $1.3MM of nickel but it was actually just bags of rocks<\/u><\/a>? Or when <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/12\/carbon-credits-california-wildfires-park-fire-forest-offset-projects-buffer-pool\/?ref=blog.danlew.net\"><u>forest-based carbon offsets are destroyed in a wildfire<\/u><\/a>? Or the myth of \u201cblue zones\u201d (places where people live extra long) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/ioe\/news\/2024\/sep\/ucl-demographers-work-debunking-blue-zone-regions-exceptional-lifespans-wins-ig-nobel-prize?ref=blog.danlew.net\"><u>being debunked as simply bad record keeping and\/or pension fraud<\/u><\/a>? Or let\u2019s make it more personal &#8211; your project is listed as due on Friday but you know will take another two weeks?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a practice in database design known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Single_source_of_truth?ref=blog.danlew.net\"><u>single source of truth<\/u><\/a>, wherein you normalize your schema such that no data is duplicated. Otherwise, you can end up in a situation where there\u2019s two different values for a single piece of data &#8211; if one table says my name is \u201cDan\u201d and the other says \u201cDaniel\u201d, which one is correct?<\/p>\n<p>The problem with any database tracking real-world objects is that <strong>your single source of truth is reality<\/strong>. That means whatever is in the database is NOT a source of truth. As such, it doesn\u2019t matter how well-designed your database or application is &#8211; you can get into trouble because the real world can change at any time.<\/p>\n<p>Digital services rely on databases, and rightly so! It\u2019s extremely useful to digitize the real world. They don\u2019t call it the \u201ccomputer revolution\u201d for nothing.
