Timber framers often need to drill accurate holes for the pegs that will fasten two timbers, and these holes occasionally need to be drilled at angles.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e5886f_1874\" data-ic-marker=\"d427e9_3908\">The designers at Mafell, the German power tool manufacturer, found that existing drill guides weren&#8217;t up to snuff for timber framers and their massive workpieces. Incumbent designs typically plunge on two skinny rods that can flex, and the angle adjustments move the point of entry for the drill, complicating marking. The hinge mechanism was designed so that the drill tip always serves as the pivot axis. The designers also added six rollers, in two pairs of three, that encircle the bit in an iris-style enclosure.
