The crumbling stone structure had been abandoned following a hurricane in the 1930s, and weather had taken its toll. It presumably made for a great party spot for the co-eds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3a6625_1245\" data-ic-marker=\"47be83_2365\">As it turns out, the house had historic significance and was older than America. Callled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.machado-silvetti.com\/the-menokin\" rel=\"\">Menokin<\/a>, it was built in 1769 by Revolutionary leader Francis Lightfoot Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. When the abandoned house was a little over 200 years old, in the 1970s, it suffered a major structural collapse.<\/p><div id=\"dev95-2970228312\" class=\"dev95- dev95-entity-placement\"><center>\r\n<script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 50,\r\n    'width' : 320,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highrevenueformat.com\/4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n\t<\/center><\/div>\n<p id=\"4ee457_1086\" data-ic-marker=\"f56822_1770\">By the 1990s, a group of historic preservation advocates formed the nonprofit Menokin Foundation, to raise money to save the building. It took until the 2000s to put together enough cash to start, and form a plan. In 2013, Boston-based architecture firm Machado Silvetti won the bid to design its actual construction. Work didn&#8217;t actually begin until 2020, which should tell you something about the glacial pace of historic restoration architecture.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5cfe57_990\" data-ic-marker=\"e4017b_1659\">First a massive roof was built over the structure, to keep workers out of the elements while they restored the foundation to prevent further collapse.
