It has been <em>quite <\/em>some time since Jesse Faden first paid a visit to the Oldest House, and in the years since Control was first released, its world of paranormal threats and enigmatic entities has continued to steadily expand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a breakdown of the complete story of Control so far.<\/p><div id=\"dev95-1500763015\" class=\"dev95- dev95-entity-placement\"><center>\r\n<script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 50,\r\n    'width' : 320,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highrevenueformat.com\/4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n\t<\/center><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-not-so-ordinary-beginnings\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not-so-Ordinary beginnings<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Control Story So Far\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qO7ebIRggv0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set in 2019, the first game opens with Jesse Faden arriving at the Federal Bureau of Control, a government agency that oversees paranormal phenomena. Jesse is originally from the fictional Maine town of Ordinary, which was subject to a supernatural occurrence in 2002 that the FBC refers to as an AWE, or Altered World Event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As children, Jesse, her brother Dylan, and their friends found an old slide projector in the town\u2019s landfill. It turns out this slide projector is something the FBC calls an Object of Power: an item from our world that has become preternaturally infused and can even imbue those who interact with it with powers of their own. In this case, the projector acted as a doorway to other dimensions when different slides were inserted into it. One of the slides housed a benevolent entity that made contact with Jesse and Dylan. Jesse described the otherworldly being as \u201clike a star\u201d, dubbing it Polaris, and it would be telepathically connected to her for the rest of her life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FBC showed up at Ordinary to claim the slide projector after it caused an Altered World Event (AWE) that resulted in the disappearance of the town\u2019s adult population and physically altered some of the kids who had discovered the Object of Power. In addition, the Faden siblings\u2019 interaction with Polaris had turned them into parautilitarians, humans with a supernatural disposition. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parautilitarians are of great interest to the Bureau, as being one is a requirement for becoming Director of the FBC, and so the Bureau attempted to detain the Faden siblings, although it only managed to snag Dylan, with Jesse escaping. Before doing so, however, Jesse had managed to end the AWE with the help of Polaris, which told her how to switch off the slide projector and burn most of the slides to prevent further catastrophe, except for the one slide that connected her to Polaris.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-welcome-to-the-federal-bureau-of-control\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Welcome to the Federal Bureau of Control<\/h2>\n<figure data-wp-interactive=\"core\/image\" data-wp-context='{ \"core\": { \"image\": { \"initialized\": true } } }' class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-ref-id=\"1892269\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.core.image.showLightbox\" style=\"cursor: zoom-in\" height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gamespot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Control-6.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1892269\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesse would spend the rest of her life trying to find her brother, but it was only when Polaris called out to her and revealed the FBC\u2019s headquarters in Manhattan that she found out where Dylan was being kept. The Bureau\u2019s headquarters, known as the Oldest House, is itself an Object of Power, but as it\u2019s a location, it\u2019s referred to as a Place of Power; the walls and halls within it constantly shift and change. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Jesse arrives, the Oldest House has gone into lockdown, as it has become infested with a paranormal resonance known as the Hiss. The Hiss is a hivemind that infects and warps most of the FBC staff, save for the few who manage to get their hands on a Hedron Resonance Amplifier (HRA), a technological vest that prevents its wearer from Hiss contamination. While Jesse does not have an HRA of her own, her connection to Polaris holds the Hiss resonance at bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early moments of her time at the Oldest House, Jesse discovers the Bureau\u2019s director, Zachariah Trench, dead in his office, having committed suicide with a weird-looking gun designated the Service Weapon. When Jesse picks it up, she is transported to the Astral Plane, the reality between dimensions.\u00a0 This is where the Board resides, yet another supernatural being that oversees the management of the FBC. Since Jesse is a parautilitarian, she can wield the Service Weapon, connecting her to the Board, which deems her worthy of succeeding Trench as the FBC\u2019s new Director.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the Oldest House, Jesse meets several surviving FBC employees, including researcher Emily Pope and the Bureau&#8217;s head of security, Simon Arish. In return for her help in combating the Hiss, the remaining FBC agents promise to provide Jesse with information on her brother. She ultimately discovers that, while undergoing training to potentially become the next Bureau Director, Dylan lost control of his powers, killing a number of FBC agents and resulting in his being locked away at the Panopticon, a location within the Oldest House where the most dangerous Objects of Power are stored.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-reunited-at-last\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reunited at last<\/h2>\n<figure data-wp-interactive=\"core\/image\" data-wp-context='{ \"core\": { \"image\": { \"initialized\": true } } }' class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-ref-id=\"1892270\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.core.image.showLightbox\" style=\"cursor: zoom-in\" height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gamespot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Control-1.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1892270\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once Jesse finally makes contact with her brother, she discovers that he has been infected by the Hiss, although he remains relatively lucid, almost as if he has merged with the hivemind\u2019s resonance rather than having been completely taken over by it. This is primarily due to his innate power as a parautilitarian, but potentially in part because he also welcomed the Hiss, as he had grown incredibly resentful of the Bureau for his abduction and mistreatment. Dylan reveals to his sister that the Hiss made its way into the Oldest House thanks to the slide projector they discovered as kids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesse also uncovers a wealth of information around the FBC\u2019s experiments involving the slide projector while exploring the Oldest House. It turns out that Trench, along with the Bureau\u2019s head of research, Casper Darling, had been leading expeditions into the single slide that survived the Ordinary AWE; the one connecting her to Polaris. The FBC discovered the entity and brought it into our world, with Darling naming it Hedron after its shape. However, while exploring Hedron\u2019s plane of reality, the Hiss made contact with Trench and slowly infected his mind.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-give-us-a-hiss\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give us a Hiss<\/h2>\n<figure data-wp-interactive=\"core\/image\" data-wp-context='{ \"core\": { \"image\": { \"initialized\": true } } }' class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-ref-id=\"1892271\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.core.image.showLightbox\" style=\"cursor: zoom-in\" height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gamespot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Control-2.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1892271\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hiss was originally from one of the slides Jesse had burned, but a piece of it had burrowed its way into Hedron\u2019s world, and it wanted to use Trench to unseal its native reality. It seems the Hiss is a being that simply wants to spread as far across the multiverse as possible, with a potential ultimate goal of accessing the Astral Plane and infecting the Board itself. While Trench succumbed to the Hiss, Darling began to commune with Hedron. Through it he learned of Trench\u2019s infection, as well as how to build the HRAs that could tap into Hedron\u2019s protective resonance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once he fully submitted to the Hiss, Trench inserted the burnt slide that connected to its homeworld into the projector and turned it on, allowing it to overrun the Oldest House. Beforehand, Darling disappeared, potentially into Hedron\u2019s slide, leaving behind as many HRAs as he could build before the infectious entity arrived.<\/p>\n<figure data-wp-interactive=\"core\/image\" data-wp-context='{ \"core\": { \"image\": { \"initialized\": true } } }' class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-ref-id=\"1892272\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.core.image.showLightbox\" style=\"cursor: zoom-in\" height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gamespot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Control-4.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1892272\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the present, Jesse can locate Hedron within the Oldest House, but not before it is overrun by FBC agents transformed by the Hiss, who then destroy it. With Hedron no longer there to protect Jesse or the unaffected Bureau employees via their HRAs, the Hiss begins to corrupt them. However, the piece of Hedron that resides within Jesse, Polaris, is still alive, and she is able to tap into it not only to cleanse herself of the Hiss, but also to become the new power source the HRAs can tap into, saving the remaining FBC agents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesse makes her way to the slide projector and discovers Dylan waiting there, the Hiss resonance attempting to use him to cross over into the Astral Plane. Jesse manages to shut off the slide projector and cleanse her brother of the Hiss\u2019 influence, although that leaves him in a comatose state. And while the projector has been shut off, the Hiss that remains is still deeply embedded in the Oldest House. Jesse accepts her role as Director to oversee the FBC\u2019s attempt to rid itself of the parasitic resonance, unaware that the Oldest House will remain in lockdown for years to come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s the story of Control so far. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pvc_clear\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"pvc_stats_3716\" class=\"pvc_stats total_only\"
