This yielded popular cars\u2014the 1988 Honda CRX, the 1989 Ford Thunderbird, the 1990 Mazda RX-7\u2014with drag coefficients (Cd) around 0.32. This aerodynamic sculpting also yielded, to my eye, good-looking and well-proportioned cars.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3f4886_4724\" data-ic-marker=\"49b181_3713\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850309_81_145389_uQjObTSwc.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"9f962f_1510\" data-ic-marker=\"9d0689_2280\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850325_81_145389__70piOfzw.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"1979a2_5895\" data-ic-marker=\"bd59ac_631\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850335_81_145389_WWF2s3Hvl.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"> <\/p>\n<p id=\"bdd90b_2262\" data-ic-marker=\"8d9733_1994\">In the 1990s, the rise of the SUV seemed to deprioritize aerodynamics, as we climbed into ever-more blocky-looking trucks. For example, the bestselling SUV of the &#8217;90s was the Ford Explorer, with a Cd of 0.43.<\/p><div id=\"dev95-3525386162\" class=\"dev95- dev95-entity-placement\"><center>\r\n<script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 50,\r\n    'width' : 320,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highrevenueformat.com\/4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n\t<\/center><\/div>\n<p id=\"132248_1901\" data-ic-marker=\"fd00e6_1166\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850330_81_145389_3DC9QPnOD.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"> <\/p>\n<p id=\"f4b370_1928\" data-ic-marker=\"6f3d3d_869\">In the 2000s, the crossover began to emerge. Initially, these had the same lousy aerodynamics as SUVs. Honda&#8217;s 2002 CR-V, for instance, had a Cd of 0.45.<\/p>\n<p id=\"94d85a_4202\" data-ic-marker=\"158949_1786\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850331_81_145389_K7fnYhzzm.png?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"> <\/p>\n<p id=\"d49360_2545\" data-ic-marker=\"57581b_1981\">But throughout the 2000s and into the 2010s, U.S. fuel standards\u2014driven in no small part by California&#8217;s stringent requirements and outsized influence\u2014drove automakers to seek efficiency gains, again through aerodynamic refinement. I&#8217;ll use Honda as an example again. Their CR-V went from 0.45 to just 0.33, with their 2023 CR-V.<\/p>\n<p id=\"66c0ab_3362\" data-ic-marker=\"de85f6_3241\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850336_81_145389_oX6_0hwR5.png?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"> <\/p>\n<p id=\"4d6b3e_2069\" data-ic-marker=\"240f1d_447\">The weird thing is, the 2023 CR-V doesn&#8217;t <i>look <\/i>very aerodynamic. Consider that the 1988 CR-X we looked at above has a Cd of 0.32. Look at the two cars side-by side: Would you guess they both have nearly the same co-efficient of drag?<\/p>\n<p id=\"e56f12_2859\" data-ic-marker=\"df35a3_1182\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"879\" data-image-height=\"258\" data-image-id=\"1850339\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850339_81_145389_jzaA5MaOQ.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"4c6364_1116\" data-ic-marker=\"a0a5b8_2151\">So how is this possible? The short answer is that the world&#8217;s automotive designers and engineers have figured out how to achieve multiple tiny gains across the entire vehicle. Subtle radii across the surface transitions, carefully-shaped A-pillars and mirror housings, more precise panel gaps, subtly-sculpted wheel arches, smooth underbody panels.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8305e1_2288\" data-ic-marker=\"513605_3478\">What this means is, today we have aerodynamic vehicles that don&#8217;t <i>look<\/i> particularly aerodynamic. One standout segment, however, is EVs. EV buyers have range concerns that gas-powered-car buyers don&#8217;t, and thus EV makers have to resort to more extreme aerodynamic styling. Take the Tesla Model Y. It has a Cd of just 0.22, and it looks it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"80b9c3_1749\" data-ic-marker=\"63ce65_3167\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850312_81_145389_nGg8jHPSq.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"> <\/p>\n<p id=\"8ef556_1656\" data-ic-marker=\"629a72_516\">Volkswagen has gone even further, with their newly-unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkswagen-newsroom.com\/en\/press-releases\/mission-efficiency-volkswagen-presents-the-worlds-most-efficient-near-production-electric-car-20691\" rel=\"\">Mission Efficiency<\/a> project. <\/p>\n<p id=\"b9bd31_8055\" data-ic-marker=\"abcda7_1299\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850323_81_145389_3utcSYzVk.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"> <\/p>\n<p id=\"d80fa2_295\" data-ic-marker=\"d3c021_479\">This was an initiative to assemble an EV with off-the-shelf production parts, but radically style the aerodynamics to improve range. The development team borrowed parts from the ID.Polo and ID.Cross, two of their Euro-market EVs, to build a car. Then they wrapped it in this flowing form for testing:<\/p>\n<p id=\"5db767_3998\" data-ic-marker=\"5a7afb_1367\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"880\" data-image-height=\"495\" data-image-id=\"1850311\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850311_81_145389_J7rMXfKlt.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"font-size: 1.1em;\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"1bccf0_1461\" data-ic-marker=\"149459_593\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"880\" data-image-height=\"703\" data-image-id=\"1850321\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850321_81_145389_ndsXoaRvn.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"font-size: 1.1em;\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"36cac5_1352\" data-ic-marker=\"c0d887_787\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-image-width=\"879\" data-image-height=\"580\" data-image-id=\"1850324\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850324_81_145389_vQXpcV80V.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"3494aa_3415\" data-ic-marker=\"27837b_3310\">Incredibly, the designers achieved a Cd of 0.158. In real-world road testing, this achieved some remarkable feats. The Mission Efficiency vehicle uses more than 30% less energy than the Polo. That means the ME can travel at 87 mph (140 km\/h) using the same amount of energy it takes the Polo to travel at 62 mph (100 km\/h).<\/p>\n<p id=\"22d694_556\" data-ic-marker=\"99178b_1563\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850314_81_145389_zTXnmg3Ez.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"> <\/p>\n<p id=\"cb2c3d_2041\" data-ic-marker=\"33b72_2824\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850315_81_145389_600nrZa5P.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"> <\/p>\n<p id=\"e9a34a_2378\" data-ic-marker=\"b43da2_4274\">In terms of range, that means the Mission Efficiency can travel nearly double the distance of the Polo, using the same amount of energy. Using the same 54.9 kWh battery, the Mission Efficiency could make 495 miles (797 km) whereas the Polo would only achieve 257 miles (413 km).<\/p>\n<p id=\"ec45fb_4491\" data-ic-marker=\"33ef1e_3122\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3files.core77.com\/blog\/images\/1850329_81_145389_FMAvLMEZs.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\"> <\/p>\n<p id=\"ec49fb_1258\" data-ic-marker=\"2feab7_1873\">While this was just an experiment, and not a precursor to a confirmed production vehicle, other EV makers are sure to notice VW&#8217;s accomplishment.
