{"id":2868,"date":"2021-08-24T06:29:25","date_gmt":"2021-08-24T06:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev95.site\/dont-stick-a-fork-in-books-yet-2\/"},"modified":"2021-08-24T06:29:25","modified_gmt":"2021-08-24T06:29:25","slug":"dont-stick-a-fork-in-books-yet-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev95.site\/ar\/dont-stick-a-fork-in-books-yet-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t stick a fork in books yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dev95-2083477986\" class=\"dev95-- dev95-entity-placement\"><script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl27862732.profitableratecpmnetwork.com\/2ad7a50e0bbc23ac6801d7b77c501463\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-2ad7a50e0bbc23ac6801d7b77c501463\"><\/div><\/div><div>\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">I just <a href=\"https:\/\/social.centreforthestudyof.net\/@xocffoeg\/106783596930464435\">came across<\/a> an excellent write-up called <a href=\"https:\/\/markcmarino.medium.com\/how-to-fork-a-book-the-radical-transformation-of-publishing-3e1f4a39a66c\">How to Fork a Book: The Radical Transformation of Publishing<\/a>. \u201cForking\u201d is a term borrowed from open source software, whose license allows anyone to make their own modified versions that diverge from the original, taking it in another direction, like a fork in a path.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, nowadays there are open source books. Forking turns them from fixed, unchanging artifacts into living works that grow and develop over their lifespans or even give birth, their very authorships blurring.<\/p><div id=\"dev95-3757946354\" class=\"dev95- dev95-entity-placement\"><center>\r\n<script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 50,\r\n    'width' : 320,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highrevenueformat.com\/4ba6b6513c00e0ba76511f798ae56401\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n\t<\/center><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, in turn, reminded me of conversations I had in the past year or so with <a href=\"https:\/\/alexschroeder.ch\/wiki\/2020-06-15_Why_Wiki%E2%80%BD\">Alex Schroeder<\/a> about wikis: an electronic medium, defined by continuous rewriting and blurred authorship, that\u2019s been in decline for a solid decade now. <a href=\"https:\/\/felix.plesoianu.ro\/blog\/blogs-forums-wikis.html\">On my blog<\/a>, I argued it\u2019s because people don\u2019t want authorship to become blurred, but clearly there are exceptions to the rule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet it doesn\u2019t seem to happen very often. While Wikipedia has been around for two decades now, and so have the Creative Commons licenses, the practice of taking a free culture book and building upon it is uncommon. In fact, this is only the second or third case I\u2019ve heard of so far. It\u2019s a lot more common in the field of <a href=\"https:\/\/opengameart.org\/\">videogame art<\/a>, as I wrote in a book of my own. And even that is relative: most people simply stick to reusing free culture works unchanged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why it matters? Because, frankly, book publishing these days looks tired and adrift. Maybe people read more, assuming we can trust <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/industry-news\/publisher-news\/article\/87009-reading-time-rose-21-in-second-half-of-2020.html\">surveys<\/a>, but I\u2019m not sure they read <em>books<\/em>. Indies struggle to sell; big publishers report moving fewer units (yet making bigger profits, go figure); and don\u2019t even get me started about what can be found in Romanian bookstores. Certainly most of my own reading time is spent online, jumping from blog to blog, going back, opening more tabs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If this makes the web sound like one giant <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Memex\">Memex<\/a>, that\u2019s because it is. It\u2019s how we always wanted to read, but could only take notes, earmark pages or collect newspaper clippings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Books don\u2019t need to be reinvented. Reading, however, does \u2014 as an act inseparable from writing. Because we ache to create, yet our creativity is too often stifled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five years ago, I argued on TeleRead\u00a0that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teleread.com\/amazon-punk-ethos-self-pub\/index.html\">self-publishing is the new punk<\/a>. Turns out I <a href=\"https:\/\/authordylanhearn.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/13\/why-self-publishing-is-the-new-punk\/\">wasn\u2019t the first one<\/a>. And you know what else punk is, by definition? A culture of reuse and remix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was going to be the end of the story. Let me ramble some more anyway. It\u2019s hard to talk about books and forks without evoking <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Garden_of_Forking_Paths\">The Garden of Forking Paths<\/a><\/em>. Our story, however, isn\u2019t about hypertext for once, but a future where asking someone if they read a particular book might elicit an answer more like, \u201cWhich edition? I\u2019ve read the one maintained by this obscure artist collective in Hamburg as it stood in 2026\u201d. In a way it would be not unlike in the Middle Ages, when each copy of a book was by definition unique.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, medieval manuscripts also never changed anymore once completed, while digital works can remain forever in flux. In practice, however, even wikis settle down after a while, their text as complete and polished as it\u2019s going to get. The original Wiki Wiki Web for example went read-only in 2014, only a few months short of its 20th anniversary. Others remain editable, able to be revived at any time should people want to. And if not, there\u2019s always forking if the license allows it. Modern technology gives us the choice, and that\u2019s what matters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve been free from the limitations of the past for a good while now.
