Most librarians are left to do it with little more than goodwill.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are currently drowning in data, bad summaries from machines, and strange social media claims. Tech platforms pretend they have algorithms to solve it. But what if the sensible solution is just down the street, sitting next to the municipal park? The public library.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people still think of libraries as silent rooms with dusty shelves and strict rules. That is an outdated view. At their core, libraries exist to help us evaluate what is true and what is nonsense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is an interesting reality: people do not trust governments or media outlets very much these days. Yet, across Europe and beyond, they still trust their local library.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why not use that trust? Librarians can run straightforward workshops on media literacy, or simply nudge people to ask basic questions. Who paid for this article? When was it published? Why does the author want you angry?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It sounds sensible. But there is a catch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artscouncil.org.uk\/research-and-data\/our-research-library\/role-public-library-combating-misinformation-and-disinformation-review-and-action-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recent research<\/a> from the University of Stirling and the University of Glasgow looked into this reality. They surveyed 372 public library staff across England, and the result is quite typical for public services: staff want to help, but they have almost no proper support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor David McMenemy, Professor of Information Ethics and Policy, University of Glasgow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stir.ac.uk\/news\/2026\/august-2026-news\/public-libraries-can-help-tackle-misinformation-and-disinformation-research-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called for investment in public libraries<\/a>. He said: <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f4ac.png?w=1280&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\ud83d\udcac\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\"> <em>Our findings suggest that public libraries could be one of our strongest defences against misinformation, but only if we invest in them as one. Staff told us again and again: we are seeing the effects of this in our libraries, we care about this, we just don\u2019t have what we need \u2013 and that\u2019s a failing of policy, not of library staff.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most library staff never had real training on how to tackle misinformation. Their institutions lack basic educational materials, and partnerships with external fact-checkers barely exist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the researchers put it, these workers are left with \u201clittle more than intent\u201d. They have the motivation, but the funding and infrastructure are missing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then comes the awkward issue of neutrality. Traditionally, libraries stay politically neutral. But what happens when someone comes in believing a dangerous medical myth or an aggressive conspiracy theory?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a librarian tries to correct them, they risk accusations of bias, censorship, or angry confrontations. Without clear guidelines from management, staff often step back just to keep the peace. Can you blame them?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To transform public libraries into robust defenses against misinformation, researchers propose a coordinated, four-pillar framework:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Staff education and training:<\/strong> Libraries need comprehensive, ongoing professional development. This goes beyond teaching basic digital skills to building a deep understanding of the psychological and sociocultural factors driving false beliefs, alongside practical techniques for handling sensitive public interactions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Centralised resource repositories:<\/strong> Creating open-access banks of vetted guidelines, checklists, and educational materials ensures libraries of all sizes can access high-quality resources without wasting limited local budgets on duplicate efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Strategic sector partnerships:<\/strong> Complex informational challenges require cross-sector collaboration. Libraries should establish formal agreements with academic institutions, healthcare providers, and fact-checking organisations to co-develop training, extend community reach, and host trusted external experts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Overarching policy and guidance:<\/strong> Standardised operational frameworks must define the boundaries of library neutrality and acceptable staff intervention. Clear guidance ensures workers can confidently advocate for factual accuracy, manage collections safely, and address controversial topics without fear of accusations of bias.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, these pillars transition libraries into proactive, trusted frontline defenders of community truth.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fighting false information is not only about clever algorithms. It is about human habits and critical thinking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we actually fund these public spaces instead of ignoring them, maybe we will build societies that can handle the internet without losing their minds.
