Earlier in his career this often manifested in his stories as behaviors that caused the protagonists to endure ridicule (\u201cLittle Louise,\u201d \u201cThe Path to the Cemetery\u201d), but this evolved into entire characters who combine extra-societal behavior with a seeming inability to halt their descent into chaos (\u201cDeath in Venice,\u201d \u201cMario and the Magician\u201d).
