Lee\u2019s Army if Northern Virginia were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/armyhistory.org\/the-battle-of-monocacy-9-july-1864\/\" title=\"https:\/\/armyhistory.org\/the-battle-of-monocacy-9-july-1864\/\" target=\"_blank\">skirmishing<\/a>\u00a0around Maryland. One of Lee\u2019s commanders who has been present at Gettysburg (General Jubal Early) began to move north directly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/historynet.com\/at-washingtons-gates-jubal-earlys-chance-to-take-the-capitol\/\" title=\"https:\/\/historynet.com\/at-washingtons-gates-jubal-earlys-chance-to-take-the-capitol\/\" target=\"_blank\">threatening<\/a>\u00a0Washington DC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He engaged Union forces in a two-day battle at\u00a0Monocacy\u00a0Creek\u200a\u2014\u200awhere Federal Forces under Major General Lew Wallace were defeated and ultimately retreated back towards\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emergingcivilwar.com\/2014\/05\/16\/a-general-remembered-lew-wallace-after-the-battle-of-monocacy\/\" title=\"https:\/\/emergingcivilwar.com\/2014\/05\/16\/a-general-remembered-lew-wallace-after-the-battle-of-monocacy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Baltimore<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200aleaving the route to the American C<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Battle-of-Monocacy\" title=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Battle-of-Monocacy\" target=\"_blank\">apital<\/a>\u00a0open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Among the approximately seventy earthen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/npshistory.com\/publications\/cwdw\/brochures\/2010.pdf\" title=\"https:\/\/npshistory.com\/publications\/cwdw\/brochures\/2010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">forts<\/a>\u00a0helping to depend Washington DC in 1864 were Fort Derussy, Fort Reno, and Fort Stephens. But the Pennsylvania 6th Corps who also contributed to a Union victory at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apcwdw.com\/battle-of-fort-stevens\" title=\"https:\/\/www.apcwdw.com\/battle-of-fort-stevens\" target=\"_blank\">Gettysburg<\/a>\u00a0would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.battlefields.org\/learn\/articles\/fort-stevens\" title=\"https:\/\/www.battlefields.org\/learn\/articles\/fort-stevens\" target=\"_blank\">reinforce<\/a> the capital. The Confederate Army would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/cwdw\/planyourvisit\/anniversary-of-the-battle-of-fort-stevens.htm?platform=hootsuite\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/cwdw\/planyourvisit\/anniversary-of-the-battle-of-fort-stevens.htm?platform=hootsuite\" target=\"_blank\">begin<\/a>\u00a0their attack at Fort Stephens\u200a\u2014\u200aless than five\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jackmillercenter.org\/article\/the-fort-stevens-incident\" title=\"https:\/\/www.jackmillercenter.org\/article\/the-fort-stevens-incident\" target=\"_blank\">miles<\/a>\u00a0from the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">President Abraham Lincoln was used to being in dangerous\u00a0situations. In 1861\u200a\u2014\u200ahe was moved to Washington for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehousehistory.org\/spies-lies-and-disguise-abraham-lincoln-and-the-baltimore-plot\" title=\"https:\/\/www.whitehousehistory.org\/spies-lies-and-disguise-abraham-lincoln-and-the-baltimore-plot\" target=\"_blank\">inauguration<\/a>\u00a0in secret by train. Just a year earlier, he was the target amid a shot that rang out while he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/articles\/lincolns-battlefield-brush-with-death\" title=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/articles\/lincolns-battlefield-brush-with-death\" target=\"_blank\">was<\/a>\u00a0riding on a\u00a0regular\u00a0trip to the soldier\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/articles\/lincolns-battlefield-brush-with-death\" title=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/articles\/lincolns-battlefield-brush-with-death\" target=\"_blank\">home<\/a>. As the Confederate Army approached Washington\u200a\u2014\u200aLincoln and his family were evacuated from their cottage\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincolncottage.org\/lincoln-july-4th-cottage\/\" title=\"https:\/\/www.lincolncottage.org\/lincoln-july-4th-cottage\/\" target=\"_blank\">retreat<\/a>. One day later\u200a\u2014\u200a both he and Mary Todd Lincoln rode to Fort Stephens to observe the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/goingoutguide\/when-the-civil-war-came-to-washington-reliving-the-battle-of-fort-stevens\/2014\/07\/10\/86aa5b94-02f1-11e4-8fd0-3a663dfa68ac_story.html\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/goingoutguide\/when-the-civil-war-came-to-washington-reliving-the-battle-of-fort-stevens\/2014\/07\/10\/86aa5b94-02f1-11e4-8fd0-3a663dfa68ac_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">fighting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Climbing onto the parapets\u200a\u2014\u200aPresident Lincoln and his stove-top hat came in range of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.delcotimes.com\/2014\/11\/11\/letter-he-took-a-bullet-meant-for-lincoln\/\" title=\"https:\/\/www.delcotimes.com\/2014\/11\/11\/letter-he-took-a-bullet-meant-for-lincoln\/\" target=\"_blank\">Confederate<\/a>\u00a0Sharpshooters. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofthelincolncollection.org\/lincoln-lore\/lincolns-first-responder-dr-charles-augustus-leale\/\" title=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofthelincolncollection.org\/lincoln-lore\/lincolns-first-responder-dr-charles-augustus-leale\/\" target=\"_blank\">surgeon<\/a>\u00a0behind him was struck in the shoulder. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jackmillercenter.org\/article\/the-fort-stevens-incident\" title=\"https:\/\/www.jackmillercenter.org\/article\/the-fort-stevens-incident\" target=\"_blank\">legend<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200aa young Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. who would later become an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/justices\/oliver-wendell-holmes-jr\/\" title=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/justices\/oliver-wendell-holmes-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Associate<\/a>\u00a0Supreme Court Judge under the Roosevelt Administration\u200a\u2014\u200ascreamed toward President Lincoln to take cover. Moments later\u200a\u2014\u200aSecretary of War Edwin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrlincolnswhitehouse.org\/washington\/the-war-effort\/war-effort-fort-stevens\/index.html\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mrlincolnswhitehouse.org\/washington\/the-war-effort\/war-effort-fort-stevens\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Stanton<\/a>\u00a0quickly ushered Lincoln away to safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The next day\u200a\u2014\u200aEarly withdrew after Fort Stephens was reinforced by more Federal forces. Union forces\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.battlefields.org\/learn\/civil-war\/battles\/fort-stevens\" title=\"https:\/\/www.battlefields.org\/learn\/civil-war\/battles\/fort-stevens\" target=\"_blank\">subsequently<\/a>cleared the peach orchard in front of Fort Stephens of Confederate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/early-s-raid.htm\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/early-s-raid.htm\" target=\"_blank\">sharpshooters<\/a>\u00a0and artillery. Among the defenders from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.98thpvi.com\/category\/more-information\/\" title=\"https:\/\/www.98thpvi.com\/category\/more-information\/\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia<\/a>\u00a0were the 98th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry which was also at Gettysburg.
